An evidence-based approach to healthcare practice requires individuals to firstly define the problem they are facing, then to determine what resources are necessary to investigate and address the problem, to conduct a thorough literature search and then to critically appraise the literature in order to resolve the issue.
They then would implement any recommended change in practice and evaluate the outcome. Supported by a specialist e-tutor, students on the proposed module work though several lectures on the topic and then undertake an evidence-based analysis of an issue within their profession.
They initially submit an outline of the problem that they propose to investigate and a description of the literature resources that they anticipate requiring. Students are given feedback from their e-tutors and will proceed to undertake literature searching and critical appraisal, submitting a portfolio of the evidence they have examined and their recommendations for professional practice.
During the course of their learning they maintain a reflective diary, which is submitted as part of their portfolio.
This inter-professional action learning approach encourages "learning by doing", is very relevant to professional practice and the current CPD agenda and its availability in this online format provides both accessibility and flexibility.
It is also hoped that this module provides a foundation for the MSc research project that students undertake later in the course, particularly equipping students to undertake audit type projects, a route that more of them are being forced to take owing to difficulties in obtaining ethical approval for laboratory based projects.
