Excellence in research and a strong ethos of promoting creativity, innovation, and skills acquisition is evident throughout our undergraduate and postgraduate modules and programmes. Students have access to the very latest subject knowledge, and gain hands-on experience, undertaking classes and training in well-equipped high-specification modern laboratories and other facilities, enhancing learning and acquisition of wide variety of key skills. Staff in the School use the latest teaching and learning tools and technologies to promote student engagement, including the use of computer-aided learning and multimedia, and exploiting the University’s virtual learning environment, BlackBoard Learn, to enrich the learning environment and flexibility of study.

Undergraduates and postgraduate students in our School are educated in the critical application of science, and given relevant training for healthcare and other scientific professions, which includes key aspects of entrepreneurship and professional practice. During their studies, all students are given the opportunity to personally contribute to the knowledge base through engaging in research in human health and disease within the internationally renowned Biomedical Sciences Research Institute. Many undergraduate programmes in the School also offer opportunities for work experience and placement, and a number of our programmes additionally lead to professionally recognized qualifications (for example BSc Hons Biomedical Science, Dietetics, and Optometry), all of which can further improve graduate employment opportunities.

Biomedical Sciences, School and Institute, dynamically engage with a wide range of professional bodies and employers across the diverse bioscience and bioindustry sectors from agri-food to diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries, together with the healthcare sector and hospitals in Northern Ireland and further afield. This helps us ensure both our teaching and research closely align with the needs of employers and bioindustry world-wide, contributing to society and further development of the knowledge based economy, all of which, in turn, ensures our highly skilled graduates have the very best educational and career opportunities.
