Dr Lisa O’Donoghue MClinRes PhD MCOptom

Lecturer in Optometry

Lisa graduated from the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology, with a first class honours degree in Ophthalmic Optics in 1987. She is now a lecturer in the University of Ulster and her research interests include the epidemiology of refractive error in childhood and early adulthood.

Lisa is involved in The NICER (Northern Ireland Childhood Errors of Refraction) Study, a prospective study of refractive status and ocular biometric measures in two cohorts of children aged 6-7 years and 12-13 years at baseline. Participants have been reassessed at three-yearly intervals and Phase 3 (6 years after baseline) is nearing completion. As well as providing epidemiological data on the prevalence of refractive errors, the NICER Study is exploring putative risk factors for the development of myopia. Lisa is also interested in evaluation of the vision testing procedures that are currently recommended for use in screening children aged 4-5 years and assessing if modifications to the current protocol could improve the sensitivity and specificity of screening for visual problems in childhood.

Presently one particular interest of Lisa is the effect environment and diet may have on refractive outcome. She is currently supervisor to a first year PhD student who is evaluating the association between outdoor light exposure, diet and refractive status, including identifying the relation between myopia and circulating blood levels of biochemical markers of light exposure.

Teaching

Clinical Supervision for OPT505 (Patient Management), OPT303 (Contact Lens Practice), OPT305 (Advanced Examination Techniques) and OPT103 (GET).

Supervision of final year research projects (OPT504 Optometry Research Project) and Masters Level projects (OPT806: Vision Science MSc Research Project).

Research

The NICER study, epidemiology of refractive error in childhood and early adulthood:

The NICER (Northern Ireland Childhood Errors of Refraction) Study is a prospective study of refractive status and ocular biometric measures in two cohorts of children aged 6-7 years and 12-13 years at baseline. Participants have been reassessed at three-yearly intervals and Phase 3 (6 years after baseline) is nearing completion. As well as providing epidemiological data on the prevalence of refractive errors, the NICER Study is exploring putative risk factors for the development of myopia. Evaluation of Childhood Vision Screening Services.

We are carrying out an evaluation of the vision testing procedures that are currently recommended for use in screening children aged 4-5 years and assessing if modifications to the current protocol could improve the sensitivity and specificity of screening for visual problems in childhood. Effects of environment and diet on refractive outcome.

A PhD study is currently evaluating the association between outdoor light exposure, diet and refractive status, including identifying the relation between myopia and circulating blood levels of biochemical markers of light exposure.
